Overview

Your school building is unique. Whether it was built two years ago or in the Victorian era, it’ll provide its own challenges to being sustainable. School buildings can be money pits. Leaking roofs and poorly fitted doors and windows may cause energy efficiency to slide into the red. Modern or Victorian, many steps can be taken to ‘green up’ your school building. Reducing carbon emissions throughout your educational setting will provide a healthier, more inspiring learning environment. And it’ll improve the health of your annual budget, too.

When you assess your school’s infrastructure, it’s important to look at sustainability as well as maintenance. This’ll give you clear areas to focus on. It’ll even allow you to put quick fixes in place while you plan and budget for more-complex, long-lasting change. Having clarity on what you want your greener school building to look like and how you want it to ‘perform’ is crucial to achieving a sustainable school.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

  • Recognise the importance of sustainability assessments when implementing long-lasting environmental change
  • Recognise how to write appropriate goals for a Climate Action Plan
  • Identify ways to assess and track whether your setting has decreased energy consumption and increased energy efficiency
  • Identify the steps to apply for a sustainability grant fund
