Course Overview

Spills can happen in any workplace that stores, handles or transports substances such as oils, fuels and chemicals. Even a small spill can put people at risk, harm the environment and disrupt operations. Understanding how to prevent spills and respond effectively when they occur is crucial, and is everyone's responsibility.

In this course, you'll build skills in accountability, attention to detail and analytical thinking. You'll explore common spill risks, practical prevention measures and key legal responsibilities. You'll learn how to choose the right spill kit, follow the correct spill response process, dispose of contaminated materials safely, and recognise when a spill needs escalating

• Identify common spill risks and describe the controls used to prevent spills from occurring
• Explain the key legal and regulatory obligations relating to spill prevention and management
• Select the correct type of spill kit for different substances and explain why choosing the right kit is critical
• Demonstrate the correct steps for responding to a spill, including protection, containment, absorption, disposal and reporting
• Describe how to dispose of contaminated spill response materials in line with environmental and hazardous waste requirements
• Recognise when a spill requires escalation and identify the correct reporting procedure
