Administering Medication Safely eLearning Course
Overview
You’re in the classroom when a pupil tells you they need their medication. It’s in their bag, labelled, and they tell you they’ve had it before. But you aren’t sure. Are you allowed to give it? Has everything been checked? What if something isn’t right – will you be held responsible?
In schools, administering medication isn’t just a routine task. It carries responsibility. Done properly, it supports pupils’ health and keeps them in school. But if you do it wrong, it can lead to serious harm.
This course will guide you through safe medication practices in a school setting. You’ll learn about your responsibilities, what checks to carry out before administering medication, and how to store and give it correctly. You’ll also learn how to spot risks, handle mistakes, and respond to emergencies with confidence and care.
Outline Learning Objectives:
- Identify the key responsibilities for administering medication safely, so you can protect pupils and yourself
- Describe the correct procedures for storing and administering medication, so you can reduce risk
- Recognise how to respond appropriately to medication emergencies, so you can keep pupils safe
Why take this course?
This course is designed for anyone responsible for administering medication in a school. That includes teachers, support staff, and senior leaders. It’s also relevant for supervising pupils at other times during the school day, such as before- and afterschool clubs.
It’ll give you a clear understanding of what safe practice looks like and what’s expected of you. More importantly, it’ll help you act with confidence, reduce risk, and keep the pupils in your care safe.
