Overview

If you work with children, it’s your duty to protect them from harm, even if it’s happening somewhere else. And protecting children from emotional abuse is just as important as protecting them from physical abuse. There are many different types of emotional abuse, and the signs will depend on the child’s age. Children may struggle to communicate what’s happening, too. So, it’s not always easy to identify or know what to do next.

Understanding what emotional abuse is, and the different forms it can take, helps you recognise and respond to it. And knowing what signs to look out for and how emotional abuse impacts children, helps you intervene in the best way.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

  • Define emotional abuse and its types, to identify and address them even when the child isn’t able to articulate their experiences
  • Identify the signs and effects of emotional abuse, to be able to take the necessary steps to intervene
