Overview

Living with a learning disability can present challenges and barriers for people every day. By making ourselves aware of these barriers, and how they effect people we can work together to make health services and wider public space more accessible for everyone. In this course we cover what learning disabilities are, what individuals unique support needs might be and discuss communication styles and safeguarding.

Audience

This course is for everyone who works in the health and care system – from private carers to hospital staff to those who commission services. 

Objectives

  • Define what a learning disability is and understand the different kind of learning disability as well as their common characteristics 
  • Recognise that individuals have unique support needs 
  • Understand the importance of meeting an individual’s communication and information needs  
  • Ensure people with a learning disability are safeguarded, including the relevant safeguarding legislation and awareness of hate crime
